Local Mission Projects

“And the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invited you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’” - Matthew 25:37-40

The Good Shepherd United Methodist Church’s Local Mission Committee focuses on serving the missions of the United Methodist Church in the Allen County area of Indiana. This committee provides avenues to “roll up our sleeves” and get involved right here in Allen County.

Local Missions Team

The Local Mission team will meet October 19, November 16, December 21, 2010 and January 18, February 15, March 15, April 19, May 17, and June 21, 2011. During our meetings we will discuss possible mission projects, determine involvement and support, and creatively address the needs of Allen County and the surrounding area through ongoing and special projects.

Tree of Angels Holiday Giving Tree

Through Tree of Angels we help children and families from Good Shepherd, Open Arms Ministries and the Allen County area during Christmas time. Children receive gifts of clothing and toys while essential gift certificates go the parents or caregivers. This year the Tree of Angels collection will be November 13 through December 12. Gift tags will be available in the Narthex at Vance & Reed. This holiday season pick up a gift tag, and pray Tree of Angels is able to reach over 150 children and their families again this year!

Associated Churches Food Bank

Members and friends are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items for the Associated Churches Food Pantry. Although the first Sunday of each month is the focus Sunday, items are accepted at any time and may be placed in the carts located at the entryways at our Vance and Reed site.

Monetary donations are received on the first Sunday in March, June, September, and December, during communion, for the purchase of meat for Associated Churches Food Pantry. The goal is $3,500.
Blood Drives (American Red Cross)

Good Shepherd hosts a summer and Christmastime blood drive. These blood drives come during critical times when the Red Cross blood supply is low. It is important we give blood; one donation can save up to three lives.

Charis House

The women and children’s division of the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission is Charis House; providing a safe place and resources for families in times of crisis. Good Shepherd holds activities such as Christmas in July, Mitten Tree and Church-wide baby showers. Monetary donations are also accepted to support for this outreach. Gift baskets are presented at Valentine’s Day and Easter to Charis House and other women’s shelters of Fort Wayne.

Footprints for Youth
Footprints for Youth is a clothing ministry that provides clothes to the over 1000 homeless school age students in Allen County. Good Shepherd collects clothes at the beginning of the school year and in January to provide students with warm and much needed clothing items.
Emergency Fund and J.O.Y. Ministry
Good Shepherd accepts donations and the Local Missions committee raises funds for the Emergency Fund which gives help to those outside our church family who come to us needing assistance. The J.O.Y Ministry is a support fund for Good Shepherd/Open Arms members and constituents who are in need of assistance. Donations for this ministry are accepted through special offerings, Communion offerings and personal donations. Contact the office at 483-8816 to request assistance or to provide financial assistance.
Habitat For Humanity
Good Shepherd joins others from across the area in building homes for low income families. From season to season we alert our congregation about current projects, opportunities to help as well as ways to contribute resources the Habitat. The goal for this year is to raise $1,500.
