Good Shepherd United Methodist Church was founded in 1964 as a neighborhood church. Throughout it’s more than 40 years of ministry Good Shepherd Church has grown from a worshipping community of approximately 100 to a multi-campus congregation of over 1300.
Our first worship was held at Brentwood Elementary in 1964. We began worshipping in our first building at Vance & Reed in 1965. This building remains a part of our campus today. Throughout our ministry we have expanded our building at Vance & Reed to include an educational wing, an expanded sanctuary, a fellowship hall, an activity center and even further sanctuary expansion.
In 2000, seeing the opportunity to expand our intended neighborhood ministry to a new neighborhood in the Fort Wayne community, we purchased the defunct Epworth United Methodist Church property in Southeast Fort Wayne. In the fall of that year we inaugurated our second ministry site, Open Arms Ministries. In 2004 the Open Arms site grew further to include an active Spanish language ministry.
In 1964, our ministry began with a mission focus through our first Mitten tree. This mission emphasis is still with us today. In 1966 our music program began, growing to become our varied current music ministry. In 1975 our preschool opened as a strong program that continues, ministering now to approximately 200 children and their families. An educational program that began as one Sunday School hour in 1966 has grown to include three primary educational times with numerous other opportunities for spiritual and intellectual growth.
Through the vast array of pastors, staff and programs that have spanned over 40 years of ministry, Good Shepherd Church was and continues to be a welcoming neighborhood congregation. In 2002 Good Shepherd Church adopted the vision of ABU--attract, build, utilize. This vision defines the ministry for which the congregation was founded…to attract individuals to Christ, build disciples for Christ, and utilizing the people of God for Christ’s mission to the entire world. |
